Childrens Optometry

Good vision is vital for your child's physical, educational and social development.

Vision develops rapidly during the first year of life to become our dominant sense. It is estimated that 1 in 5 preschoolers have a vision problem.

We recommend a full eye examination for children before they start school and then regularly during primary and high school.

Blurred vision is a common problem, but at Eyekonic, we also assess for strong and efficient focussing , eye teaming, accurate and full eye tracking. Assessing how the brain interprets visual information (visual processing), can detect areas of delayed development which may affect progress at school.

Applying the holistic approach of behavioural optometry, our optometrist will develop a personalised treatment plan. This can include glasses to correct or support vision, a course of vision training, advice on best visual habits, referral to eye specialists or other health professionals.

As it can be difficult to tell if your child has a vision problem, it is important to have regular eye exams and also look out for signs of vision problems such as:

  • Difficulty seeing things in the distance including  in the classroom or TV
  • Holding devices or books too close
  • Squinting at distant or near objects
  • Headaches
  • Excessive eye rubbing
  • Watery, tired or uncomfortable eyes when reading
  • Covering an eye when trying to watch TV or read
  • Skips words while reading
  • Avoids reading or homework
  • Poor concentration or easily distracted
  • Poor recall or understanding with reading
  • Reversing letters and words
  • Falling behind with school work
